about Megan
Megan Smith is a textile designer, artist and the founder of Cloth and Print, her textile studio in Cape Town, South Africa. Megan creates original designs which she hand screen prints onto natural fabrics, using these in a collection of accessories and homeware. Small print runs keep things special and individual. Where Cloth meets Print...one repeat at a time.
With a passion for pattern, Megan explores the themes of storytelling and memory through her printed craft. The narrative behind a design is an important aspect of her work, giving a real sense of depth to a pattern and telling a tale beyond the surface of the printed textile.
Megan studied in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal in the mid-1990's, excelling and graduating with a degree in Textile Design. After working in the textile industry for a number of years, she married and moved to Cape Town where she began freelancing in a variety of textile and design fields. With a strong desire to launch her own handmade textile collection, she submitted her work to Design Indaba and was chosen to be part of the 2016 Emerging Creatives exhibition where she proudly launched her brand Cloth and Print. And so the adventure began...
Megan is married with two adult sons. Most days, you'll find Megan hard at work printing, sewing or creating at her home studio. Often, when the waves are good, you'll find her surfing at her local break Muizenberg. When the waves aren't ideal, then she's walking in the forest behind her home with her dogs, dreaming up new designs.
